MODERN PRAIRIE HOME
Project Type: Custom Residential (Concept)
Location: Conroe, Texas
Project Size: 1,600 sq.ft.
Some feelings of being outdoor are indescribable. It can be a breeze of fresh air, could be the scent of nearby wildflowers, or a smell of the river creek close by. Imagine adding to that sensation the warmth of exterior wooden cladding. The aroma of softwood still seeping through the planks. The only thing that would make being indoor worth it, is having large windows that open to the outdoors, bringing all the natural light and making you feel that you are still outside in the nature. Such was the intention behind this modern prairie home. It was meant to blend into its environment, add to it, instead of taking away, and produce a custom home design that meets client's ambitions and goals. At the end, this simple, yet modern residential building appeared in the middle of the valley, offering its homeowners a peaceful and tranquil abode. We hope it will be an everlasting heirloom that will pass on for many generations to come.

Beyond a wonderful curb appeal this modern sustainable prairie home offers homeowners to live off-grid since the single slope roof is oriented toward the South and has ample space for a large solar panel installation. Such roof design also creates a perfect opportunity for rainwater collection that could almost completely supplement the need for domestic piped water. Glazing around the building lit up the space with natural sunlight and are oriented away from the Southern Sun in order to reduce solar heat gain while maximizing light penetration. As wooden cladding weathers with every seasoning, it adapts the local colors and will eventually blend with a trunk of a tree.

The interior of this prairie home speaks volumes of its location. Interior wooden shiplap siding mimics the exterior one, does continuing the feeling of being outdoor without taking away from the warmth of the inside. Concrete floor offers an easy-maintenance option to the client. Leather furniture adds to the rustic interior feel making one feel as if they are in a cozy cottage. White sloped ceiling makes the spaces larger to the eye and follows the roof's slope in order to amplify the main entry and minimize attention to the back one. Contrasting doors and trim are easily highlighted against the warmth of the interior wood.

Dining space is located in the back of the building next to the back entry, thus creating a more intimate atmosphere for conversations, parties and meal sharing. Certainly, in the center of the dining space needs to be a proper wooden table with warm chairs all around. Extended countertop offers additional space for seating and conversations. In general, the open concept interior is not just easy for a home builder, but also for the homeowners to walk around without obstacles in their way. Properly designed bookshelves serve as wonderful space separators while bringing a certain thematics to the space. It is our believe that happiness, peace and joy will be found amongst the walls of this modern custom home.
