Greenhouse Classroom

Project Type: Commercial (Concept)
Location: Denton, Texas
Project Size: 1,670 sq.ft.
This classroom design is located within a conceptual Hortarium, a new architectural typology focused on local food production and community engagement. Imagine every weekend going to a park that has many delicious, fun and entertaining places to visit, and at the same park you get to take classes related to cooking, gardening, pottery and more. This classroom is inspired by the idea of being a part of the process plants are grown in a greenhouse, highly supervised, given just exactly what is needed for optimum growth, naturally lit and more. Therefore, the tinted glass keeps the space lit without any need for supplemental lighting. Restrooms located on the left side of the building around the corner from the main entry, thus allowing the classroom to be a private setting with little to no disturbance. Exposed air conditioning duct keeps the mechanicals functioning without any obstruction. Movable tables and chairs make this space easily reconfigurable for various types of events and settings.
Modern metal entry with wooden siding reaching up to 3 feet make the greenhouse classroom feel welcoming and warm. The greenhouse is surrounded by plants and benches thus allowing for family members to explore the perimeter and relax while their loved ones are learning a skill or two.
Hanging plants, box planters and plant starters give this classroom an impression of a fully functioning greenhouse. However, working around greenery in the natural sunlight has proven via multiple studies to be prudent to one's learning skills. Large garage-door openings on the left allow fresh air to circulate during warm months. Flagstone slate flooring offers beautiful aesthetics as well as functional practicality of low-maintenance. A classroom like this should be incorporated into every learning environment thus fostering skill learning and sustainability as a whole.
